Harris to integrate Falcon radios in MRAPs

ROCHESTER, N.Y., May 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department contracted Harris to support its next-generation armored vehicle program with long range tactical radio integration services.

U.S. company Harris, which Wednesday announced it was selected to deliver variants of its manpack handheld radio systems to support troops in the International Security Assistance Force operating in Afghanistan, said it received an additional order to supply the Defense Department with its Falcon II AN/VRC-104 high-frequency radios.

Under the $139 million deal, Harris will deliver its tactical radio systems for integration with mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles used in Iraq.

Harris said its AN/VRC-104s will also be integrated into the more maneuverable MRAP-all terrain vehicles operating in Afghanistan.

"This software-defined radio system will provide beyond-line-of-sight communications in the rugged and mountainous terrain of Afghanistan," Steve Marschilok, Harris RF Communications Defense Department business president, said in a statement.

Marschilok said the AN/VRC-104 vehicular radio system is designed to include the company's AN/PRC-150(C) long-range communication radio.
