Army orders additional Buffalo vehicles

LADSON, S.C., May 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has modified a contract with South Carolina's Force Protection for the delivery of additional roadside bomb clearance vehicles.

The new order is for Force Protection's Buffalo Mine Protected Clearance Vehicles, which have been widely used in Iraq and Afghanistan to counter the constantly evolving improvised explosive device threats.

"Buffalo has proven to be the leader in route clearance missions and has saved untold numbers of lives over the last several years in combat operations," Randy Hutcherson, Force Protection chief operating officer, said in a statement.

Force Protection said Wednesday in a release that the Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command ordered an additional 60 of its Buffalo vehicles under a deal worth $62.4 million.

Deliveries of the Buffalo vehicles are expected to begin before 2011.
