
PASCAGOULA, Fla., May 3 (UPI) -- Defense company Northrop Grumman received funding from the U.S. Navy to support the production of the next USS San Antonio LPD 17 class ship.
The $184 million contract is for U.S. company Northrop Grumman to procure long lead time materials including engines, generators and electrical equipment for the construction of the Navy's 10th landing platform dock ship.
Referred to as the LPD 26, the USS San Antonio LPD 17 class ship is the 10th vessel in the class of ships with the Navy's latest survivability and network capabilities.
"This procurement contract enables us to continue our focus on effective and efficient supply chain management through the advanced purchase of essential material that will help us meet our schedule commitments with our Navy customer," Tim Farrell, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Gulf Coast LPD program vice president and program manager, said in a statement.
The 10 ships of the LPD 17 class of ships, designed to support next-generation vehicles including the MV-22 Osprey and the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, is part of the Navy's efforts to develop modern amphibious transport dock ships.
