MINNEAPOLIS, April 27 (UPI) -- Defense contractor Alliant Techsystems announced it received a contract to produce composite components for the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter.
Aerospace company Lockheed Martin awarded Alliant Techsystems, or ATK, with a contract in excess of $240 million to produce composite materials for low-rate initial production of the F-35 Lightning II, the company announced.
ATK under the terms of the contract provides wing-box skins, lower wing-box skins and engine nacelle skins for different variants of the F-35.
The F-35 Lighting II combines stealth technology with the high-speed technology of jet fighters. Production begins this year and is scheduled through 2015.
ATK said it received a separate contract from Northrop Grumman to manufacture composite inlet ducts for the F-35. That contract is valued at $10 million.
"The F-35 is a cornerstone of ATK's growth strategy for our aerospace structures business," said Mark DeYoung, president and chief executive officer at ATK.
