MARIETTA, Ga., April 20 (UPI) -- An updated HC-130J combat rescue tanker gives the U.S. Air Force unparalleled abilities in demanding operational environments, executives said in Georgia.
Lockheed Martin rolled out its updated fleet of HC-130J combat rescue tankers for the Air Combat Command division of the U.S. Air Force.
Air Force officials said recovery missions are a vital part of U.S. national defense, noting the HC-130J will help the military in expanding operations in wartime and in relief operations.
The U.S. Air Force contracted Lockheed Martin to build 21 of the so-called Super Hercules rescue tankers to replace aging HC-130s and special operations MC-130s.
The new tanker has enhanced service-life wings and cargo handling systems. Provisions are included for infrared countermeasures as well, Lockheed said.
"This new configuration of the proven C-130J will give Air Combat Command unparalleled capability for combat search and rescue," said Ross Reynolds, Lockheed Martin vice president for C-130 programs.
