MUNICH, Germany, April 16 (UPI) -- MTU Aero Engines announced a milestone in Germany with contributions to the completion of the first high-speed, low-pressure jet turbine for Pratt & Whitney.
MTU Aero Engines said it completed work on the geared turbofan for Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1524G engine for the Bombardier CSeries aircraft.
The on-time delivery means the aircraft is moving closer to the production phase, executives said.
"The completion of this first high-speed, low-pressure turbine ensures the test program for the PW1524G engine continues on schedule," added Bob Saia, vice president for next-generation products at Pratt & Whitney.
The turbine now makes it way to a test facility in Florida for installation in the PurePower PW1524 engine.
Certification for the propulsion system is expected by 2012. The Bombardier CSeries enters into service in 2013 with German carrier Lufthansa as the intended customer.
