Joint naval drills start in Scottish water

FASLANE, Scotland, April 14 (UPI) -- Joint military forces launched the Joint Warrior 10-1 military exercise off the coast of Scotland to practice deployment and combined military responses.

The British military is leading the multinational exercise to train in interoperability of allied navies. The guided missile destroyer USS Laboon is one of six U.S. Navy ships in the exercise, the U.S. military said.

The Laboon will take part in exercises for traversing minefields and in fast-inshore attacks. The Laboon followed the HMS Brocklesby minesweeper through a simulated mine-laden track in exercises this week.

The multinational exercise promotes the U.S. Navy's 2nd Fleet goal of conducting safe and effective missions, supporting maritime forces worldwide and partnering with U.S. allies.

Navies from Britain, the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and New Zealand are participating in the exercise scheduled through April 23.

The Laboon is accompanied by the guided missile destroyer USS Barry, guided missile cruisers USS Vella Gulf and USS Vicksburg, missile frigate USS Kauffman and oiler USNS Leroy Grumman.
