WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates signed a defense cooperation agreement with his Brazilian counterpart during a Washington ceremony.
Gates welcomed Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim to Washington to discuss areas of joint defense concern.
The defense cooperation agreement signed Monday by the two outlines ways in which the countries will cooperate in research and development, technology and the acquisition of defense products and services, the U.S. State Department announced.
Combined military training, joint military exercises and naval visits to each country are included in the agreement.
The State Department added the countries shared a special defense relationship as the two most populous democracies in the Western Hemisphere.
Washington, the State Department added, seeks similar partnerships with other countries in the Americas.
"The strengthening of U.S.-Brazil defense cooperation at the strategic, operational and tactical levels will enable our two countries and our neighbors, to come closer to achieving this goal," the State Department added.
