LONDON, March 30 (UPI) -- The British Defense Ministry announced the advancement of several aircraft and weapon programs following the release of new contracts and agreements.
British Defense Secretary Bob Ainsworth said Monday that a contract has been secured to support the maintenance of the Hawk T Mk2 advanced jet trainer aircraft under an approximately $181.1 million deal with BAE Systems. The Defense Ministry additionally signed a contract with Boeing for the delivery of 22 new Chinook helicopters, a Defense Ministry release said.
Ainsworth also announced a new agreement to continue development of the Complex Weapons program with MBDA and an agreement to advance the A400M military transport aircraft with Airbus.
"These commitments will enable the (British air force) to continue to provide essential air power on operations," Ainsworth said in a statement.
"These projects demonstrate the Defense Ministry's commitment to providing our armed forces with world-class equipment and support, as well as to sustaining the United Kingdom's defense industry."
