ANNISTON, Ala., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has awarded BAE Systems a contract modification to provide refurbishment services for M113 tracked armored personnel carriers.
British company BAE received the award from the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, Life Cycle Management Command. Under the $32 million contract modification, BAE will refurbish the 417 of Army's M113 vehicles.
The contract is part of an effort by the Army to extend the life of the M113s. BAE will be expected to return the tracked carriers to an operational condition similar to before the vehicles were used in the Iraq and Afghanistan combat theaters among other deployments.
"The M113 plays a significant role in both urban combat and peacekeeping roles for militaries of at least 44 countries around the world," Joe McCarthy, BAE Systems Heavy Brigade Combat Team Systems vice president and general manager, said in a statement.
"Replacing war torn equipment and providing our customers with the modern systems they need to work on the battlefield is absolutely crucial to the militaries worldwide that use this vehicle."
