SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- General Dynamics has received notice from the U.S. National Security Agency that its telephone system has been cleared for a top secret security classification.

U.S. company General Dynamics says its C4 Systems unit received an NSA certification for its Sectera vIPer secure phone technology. The NSA certified the Sectera vIPer phone with the company's Public Switched Telephone Network is secured for top secret level communications.

General Dynamics says the NSA certification marks a milestone for the technology and enables military and government authorities to use a traditional telephone with the Sectera vIPer and Public Switched Telephone Network and ensure secured voice communications.

"The certification makes the vIPer Phone with Public Switched Telephone Network Connect a cost-effective solution as users will no longer have support and maintenance of their legacy Secure Telephone Units or STU-IIIs," John Cole, General Dynamics C4 Systems vice president of information assurance, said in a statement.
