NAVAL AIR STATION PATUXENT RIVER, Md., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin announced a milestone for its F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft program following a successful propulsion test.

Lockheed Martin says the F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing variant successfully conducted a flight test engaging its STOVL propulsion system in flight. The propulsion system is a Pratt & Whitney-made F135 engine driving Rolls-Royce LiftFan technology.

The 14-minute STOVL-mode test was the first in-flight propulsion system test for marking a milestone for development of the F-35B STOVL aircraft variant, under development to conduct short takeoffs, hovering and vertical landings.

"The joint F-35 industry and government team has already shown during extended ground tests that the STOVL propulsion system performs well, and thousands of hours of component testing has validated its durability," Dan Crowley, Lockheed Martin executive vice president and F-35 program general manager, said in a statement.

"Now we are seeing early proof that the system operates in flight as our team predicted."
