FORT BENNING, Ga., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army's Maneuver Battle Lab recently conducted live-fire testing on a new mortar system designed to reduce the weight soldiers are required to carry.
Soldiers at the Maneuver Battle Lab based at Fort Benning conducted testing on a new M8 base plate for the M224 Lightweight Company Mortar System. The new M8 X is a next-generation plate weighing 9 pounds less than the M7 plate, the Army reported.
The plates are designed to support M224 firing in all directions. The current M8 plate restricts the distance and direction of the weapon system requiring Army units to still carry the M7. Officials say the new M8 X is part of an effort to improve firing options and provide soldiers with a lighter plate.
"If they can make it multipurpose and you just have to carry one, it would be a great advantage to the Lightweight Company Mortar System," Staff Sgt. Justin Jay said in a statement.
"The base plate overall has a lot of potential -- once they work out some of the initial design flaws."
