NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has received delivery of its newest Northrop Grumman-built Virginia-class submarine following the recent successful completion of sea trials.
U.S. company Northrop Grumman says its Shipbuilding unit and partner General Dynamics Electric Boat announced the completion and delivery of the New Mexico (SSN 779) next-generation nuclear-powered submarine to the Navy.
Northrop Grumman released a statement in early December marking the successful completion of sea trials for the New Mexico. The company's delivery of the submarine Tuesday was four months ahead of schedule.
"New Mexico's delivery is a reflection of the commitment, dedication and hard work of the shipbuilders at Newport News, our Electric Boat partners and the Navy," Becky Stewart, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding submarine program vice president, said in a statement.
"We delivered her in record time, using one million fewer man-hours than her predecessor USS North Carolina (SSN 777)."
