LONDON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The British Defense Ministry released its Future Helicopter Strategy, which includes purchasing new Chinook helicopters to support operations in Afghanistan.
British Defense Secretary Bob Ainsworth announced Tuesday the Defense Ministry will purchase 22 new Chinook helicopters. Ainsworth said the twin-engine helicopters are part of an effort to address evolving requirements in Afghanistan.
The purchase of 22 new helicopters, part of the Future Helicopter Strategy, will increase the Royal Air Force's Chinook helicopter fleet to 70 aircraft.
"Helicopter capability has already doubled in the last three years and this future strategy builds on this, ensuring that our Armed Forces have the very best resources at their disposal," Ainsworth said in a statement.
