Pratt & Whitney, U. of Alabama partner

CANOGA PARK, Calif., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. propulsion technologies developer Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne announced the opening of its new research facility at the University of Alabama.

Pratt & Whitney partnered with the University of Alabama in Huntsville to open what it calls the PoWeR Innovations Research facility. Pratt & Whitney says the research installation is part of an effort to expand next-generation technologies.

As part of the partnership Pratt & Whitney is expected to work with researchers at the University of Alabama on new propulsion systems for defense and commercial applications including missile defense and space shuttle technologies.

"We believe that combining Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's capabilities and experience with the curriculum, creativity and talent at the University of Alabama in Huntsville will enable us to create new technologies and expand into new business areas," Jim Maser, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne president, said in a statement.
