New Mexico sub completes first sea trials

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. company Northrop Grumman says its Shipbuilding unit achieved a milestone following the completion of the New Mexico (SSN 779) submarine's first sea trials.

The New Mexico, the sixth Virginia-class ship, is a next-generation nuclear-powered submarine under development for the U.S. Navy at Northrop Grumman's facility in Newport News, Va.

Northrop Grumman announced the New Mexico has completed its first round of sea trials marking a milestone for the submarine's development ahead of eventual deployment.

"The first sea trial is a milestone that the entire shipbuilding and Navy team has been working hard to achieve," Becky Stewart, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's submarine program vice president, said in a statement.

"This accomplishment is a testament to the craftsmanship, dedication, persistence, and pride that our people take in the product they build -- a very complex and high quality submarine."
