WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Homeland Security Department announced plans to partner with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority on a new biological terrorism study.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced Wednesday the department's Science and Technology Directorate will work with the MBTA on a study examining the potential of a bioterrorist attack on a subway system.
Officials say researchers will study the behavior of airborne contaminants through the release of harmless tracer gases in more than 20 stations and in subway cars as part of an effort to produce findings that can prepare emergency response authorities in case of an attack.
"Proactively studying and preparing for possible threats is one of our most effective strategies for fortifying our critical infrastructure," Napolitano said in a statement.
"This study is one of many efforts the department is undertaking across the country to inform our emergency response planning in preparation for chemical or biological terrorist attacks."
