AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted BAE Systems for its bar armor kits for integration with mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles to increase troop survivability.

British company BAE announced its Texas-based unit received the contract from the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, Life Cycle Management Command.

Under the $42 million deal BAE will deliver its L-Rod bar armor kits for integration with the RG-31 and Cougar MRAP vehicles in a move to protect troops from rocket-propelled grenade attacks and other explosive threats.

"These rocket propelled grenade defense systems represent BAE Systems' commitment to the soldier and our guiding principle -- we protect those who protect us," Neil Piscitelli, BAE Systems L-Rod director, said in a statement.

"L-Rod bar armor saves lives. There is a genuine need for this product, and we will continue to deliver."
