WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. company Harris Corp. has achieved a milestone following a successful review of a high data processing emergency weather prediction technology.

Harris is working on a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-Series R Ground Segment data processing system as part of a U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration program.

Officials announced Harris successfully completed a Systems Requirements Review for the GOES-R GS program. The GOES-R GS technology is part of an effort to enable the processing of 40 times more data than is currently possible to provide severe weather information to mission critical and emergency management decision makers.

"This milestone establishes a common understanding of all of the requirements the GOES-R ground segment must meet during development, deployment and operation," Ray Thorpe, Harris Government Communications Systems GOES-R programs vice president, said in a statement.

"The successful completion of this review brings us one step closer to fielding a weather prediction system that will give forecasters an unprecedented edge when dealing with dangerous weather conditions."
