SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin has been selected by the U.S. Navy to design a new enemy threat detection system for the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program.
U.S. company Lockheed Martin was awarded an initial $9.9 million contract to develop a next-generation electronic warfare technology as part of the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program Block 2 Upgrade.
Lockheed Martin will deliver a preliminary design for the naval vessel threat detection system, based on the company's Integrated Common Electronics Warfare System, by June 2010.
"This is a proven solution that will improve the surface navy's electronic warfare system," Carl Bannar, vice president and general manager of the Lockheed Martin Radar Systems business in Syracuse, N.Y., said in a statement.
"By choosing Lockheed Martin in this competition, the Navy has endorsed our technical approach, which includes commercial off the shelf components for proven cost savings and ease of maintenance."
