INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has partnered with EnerDel Inc. on a project to develop a hybrid variant of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle.

U.S. company and lithium-ion battery solutions developer EnerDel was awarded the contract to work with the Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center as part of an 18-month partnership.

Under the collaborative deal EnerDel and the Army TARDEC will develop four power system prototypes for a hybrid Humvee for evaluation and testing.

"This is an opportunity to showcase the true capabilities of the EnerDel technology in conditions that demand the highest levels of safety, performance and reliability," Rick Stanley, EnerDel president, said in a statement.

"In keeping with a long tradition, we also expect that innovations perfected here will have important benefits for the commercial markets."
