MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Harris Corp. has achieved a milestone under the U.S. Navy's Commercial Broadband Satellite Program following successful satellite terminal testing.
U.S. company Harris announced recent qualification testing of a satellite terminal technology was successfully completed. The testing is part of a Navy contract for Harris to deliver 55 of its satellite communications terminals with X- and Ku-band capabilities.
The successfully completed tests, part of the Commercial Broadband Satellite Program, move the contract into the initial production phase for Harris. The satellite terminals are designed to provide Navy personnel Internet, video and other broadband service access while at sea with next-generation bandwidth capabilities.
"Completion of qualification testing is a key milestone for this program, as these terminals will significantly enhance the Navy's ability to provide high-data-rate satellite communications to shipboard personnel throughout the world," Wes Covell, Harris Defense Programs president, said in a statement.
"This represents a new Navy satellite communication capability that will provide the most advanced communications services available to deployed personnel."
