TEWKSBURY, Mass., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted Raytheon to test and deliver new Airborne Low Frequency Sonar technologies supporting anti-submarine warfare initiatives.
Under the $81.1 million award, U.S. company Raytheon will provide its AN/AQS-22 Airborne Low Frequency Sonar systems for integration into the Navy's MH-60R helicopter.
Officials say Raytheon will deliver 23 of its ALFS technology, designed for submarine detection and tracking along with other underwater communication and environmental data gather capabilities.
"ALFS is the focal point of the carrier strike group's anti-submarine warfare capability," Navy Capt. Dean Peters, H-60 helicopter program manager, said in a statement.
"In conjunction with other sensors on the MH-60R, and because of the ability to transmit data to surface combatants, the fleet is planning to take full advantage of ALFS' capabilities."
