MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department has contracted Savi to deliver its radio frequency identification tracking technologies to support real-time cargo monitoring.
U.S. company Lockheed Martin made the announcement that its Savi company was awarded the contract from the Army Information Technology, E-Commerce and Commercial Contracting Center as part of the RFID III procurement vehicle.
Under the $6.6 million order, Savi will deliver its ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 18000-7 standard, or DASH7, RFID tracking technologies to support Defense Department applications.
"This initial order of DASH7 RFID devices marks the Defense Department's conversion of RFID products to an open global standard that will support multi-national interoperability and innovative solutions that can leverage sensor-rich networks," David Stephens, Savi Technology chief executive officer, said in a statement.
"We're gratified to be both a long-term supplier of RFID solutions to the Defense Department, and now a pioneering supporter of its transition to standards-based technologies that will help provide war fighters with the right supplies at the right time to get the job done."
