DILI, Timor-Leste, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The USS Bonhomme Richard amphibious assault ship arrived in the Savu Sea for a multilateral exercise in coordination with the Timor-Leste government.
The USS Bonhomme Richard is the flagship of the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group, ARG. She displaces more than 40,000 tons and boasts a 2.2-acre flight desk.
ARG Sailors along with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed for Marine Exercise 2009 for theater security cooperation programs with the Timor-Leste and Australian militaries.
"We're excited to work with our Timor-Leste and Australian partners," said Commodore Capt. Rodney Clark, the ARG commander. "The ARG/MEU team hopes to build upon a strong relationship with this new country and make a difference in the community."
The USS Cleveland and USS Rushmore join the ARG in corresponding operations in neighboring Indonesia.
The Bonhomme Richard brings medical personnel to the aid of local healthcare workers, the U.S. Navy said.
