ST. LOUIS, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A weapons team with defense contractor Boeing announced the successful test of its GBU-4 small diameter bomb, which it says will transform the battlefield.
A Boeing weapons team concluded more than three years of a risk reduction program with the flight test and detonation of its GBU-40 small diameter bomb.
A guided test vehicle deployed from an F-15E Strike Eagle at Eglin Air Force Base was used in the test that resulted in the weapon impact and fuse detonation on the intended target.
Debra Rub, vice president of the weapons program at Boeing, said her team created a robust weapons system that has the technological capability to meet the unknown threats of the future.
"Bottom line, our weapon system has proven itself, and when this capability is available to the war fighter it will help transform the battlefield," she said.
Boeing said the weapon performed as expected and met all of the test goals. The company conducted previous flight tests in May and August 2007.
