STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- An updated proposal for the Brazilian air force envisions a program by Saab to develop, operate and maintain the next generation of the Gripen fighter jet.
Saab announced it submitted an update for an offer for 36 next-generation Gripens for the Brazilian air force.
The proposal meets requirements submitted by Brazil to develop, manufacture and upgrade the independent multirole fighter.
"This will be a perfect match built on complementing abilities and technological excellence," said Saab Chief Executive Officer Ake Svensson.
The proposal aims to provide Brazil with the ability to produce as much as 80 percent of the airframes and other components of the Gripen.
Saab says the Gripen will be among the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world. Its active phased array radar and extended range of more than 2,400 miles contributes to its expanded role.
Saab also proposed to replace the fleet of SK 60/Saab 105 trainers with the A-20 Super Tucano for the Swedish air force.
