EAGAN, Minn., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin was awarded a $28.1 million contract to provide the first phase of networks to increase the situational awareness of the Iraqi air force.
The contract outlines the first phase of an integrated network for awareness in the military and civilian airspace for the fledgling Iraqi air force.
Through its Tactical Systems business based in Minnesota, Lockheed Martin will deliver operational training suites, ground-to-air transmitter and receiver sites and long-range air-surveillance radar systems to Iraq within 27 months.
Rick Udicious, vice president and general manager of Tactical Systems, said the program would go a long way toward creating a sustainable Iraqi air force.
"This project enhances the Iraqi air force's capability by significantly improving situational awareness with modern command and control capabilities that are interoperable with other coalition assets," he said.
The U.S. military is in the process of handing over several key assets to their Iraqi counterparts as part of a gradual withdrawal.
The Iraqi air force took control of C-130 air operations from the U.S. military as part of that effort earlier this week.
