Norway receives upgraded P-3 Orions

MARIETTA, Ga., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The Royal Norwegian air force received new production P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft as part of a life cycle sustainment program, said Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed Martin described the delivery as a "milestone" in the P-3 Aircraft Service Life Extension Program.

The program replaces, among other things, the outer wings, the lower surface assembly of the center wing, horizontal stabilizer and stabilizer leading edges.

Fatigue-life limiting structures are replaced on the P-3 and new alloys are used to enhance the corrosion resistance of the aircraft.

"Once the Norwegian P-3s are fitted with these new wings and the accompanying ASLEP components, the Royal Norwegian air force will be able to execute their maritime patrol missions with confidence well into the future," said Rob Weiss, Lockheed Martin Global Sustainment executive vice president.

The P-3 is a long-range patrol aircraft with the ability to carry a variety of weapons, including Harpoon anti-surface missiles and the MK-50 torpedo.

The air force receives six extension kits, two conditional kits and engineering support under its contract with Lockheed Martin.
