SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. Air Mobility Command welcomed a Pentagon announcement that it approved a request for a replacement for the KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-10 Extender.
"This is a great day not only for Air Mobility Command, which operates our nation's fleet of aerial refueling aircraft, but also for our country as this is a capability we critically need," said Gen. Arthur J. Lichte, the AMC commander.
The U.S. Defense Department announced last week its acquisition strategy for replacement of the aging fleet of KC-135 and KC-10 refueling tankers.
The program will replace a fleet of aircraft commissioned for the U.S. Air Force nearly 50 years ago.
William J. Lynn, the deputy U.S. secretary of defense, said the acquisition strategy is based on "best value" criteria, not on cost alone.
The U.S. Air Force has 415 KC-135s in its inventory. The new program calls for 179 new refueling tankers during the next 15 years with initial production slated for 2015.
"As the war fighter, I'm glad to see this day come," said Gen. Lichte.
