HERNDON, Va., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has received a new security system designed to improve secured access to classified data.

U.S. companies Lockheed Martin and IBM delivered a next-generation information security system to the NGA that replaces a previous customized and labor intensive system in use since the 1980s.

Lockheed Martin and IBM say the new NGA information system is designed to improve management of security on multiple levels and provide secured access to classified data.

"Multi-level security is all about exercising the right amount of control over critical data," Jerry Mamrol, Lockheed Martin GeoScout program director, said in a statement.

"Users need to collaborate, share data between agencies, and access information from the field, but the system must ensure that those users are only accessing data they're authorized to have. This new solution improves NGA's ability to ensure that the right data gets to the right users, and not to anyone else."
