SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army announced it has broken ground on its new ground vehicles testing facility alongside an existing site at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Mich.
The Army contracted Texas-based Southwest Research Institute to provide engineering support for the new Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center.
The new 30,000-square-foot facility, called the Ground Systems Power and Energy Laboratory, will support the testing of military ground vehicles from light transports to heavy combat vehicles.
"GSPEL's primary mission is to reduce the development time while simultaneously improving reliability associated with advanced technologies so they can be used immediately with high confidence in demanding Army conditions," Mike Kluger, a senior program manager in the Southwest Research Institute Fuels and Lubricants Research Division, said in a statement.
GSPEL is expected to be operating in two years.
