SAN DIEGO, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy's Matthew Perry (T-AKE 9) dry cargo-ammunition ship has been launched by General Dynamics in San Diego.

The Matthew Perry launch, by General Dynamics' subsidiary National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, marks the ninth ship of the Navy's Lewis and Clark (T-AKE) class of ships.

Named in honor of Navy officer Commodore Matthew Perry, the new vessel is a dry cargo-ammunition ship for the Navy and is expected to be delivered to the Military Sealift Command in the first quarter of 2010.

According to a news release the Matthew Perry's primary mission will be "to deliver more than 10,000 tons of food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions to combat ships on the move at sea."
