SUFFOLK, Va., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. company Lockheed Martin says its new smart-phone applications could add enhanced situational awareness to soldiers in the field.

Lockheed Martin recently demonstrated smart-phone technologies loaded with its new applications at the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration. The applications enable soldiers to download high-value tactical data that officials say offers enhanced situational awareness.

Company officials say its new smart-phone applications combine satellite and commercial third-generation technology, and legacy military radio nets for a hybrid tactical communications system.

"Our success with this technology at the 2009 Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration last month demonstrates Lockheed Martin's commitment to delivering systems that combine the best attributes of military technology with cutting-edge commercial products," John Mengucci, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services-Defense president, said in a statement.

"This integration provides more affordable and powerful solutions to the warfighter, while still addressing special requirements for security and tactical applications."
