FARMINGDALE, N.Y., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin Canada has contracted Telephonics Corp. to support the Halifax-class frigate modernization with identification friend or foe technologies.
U.S. company Telephonics was selected by prime contractor Lockheed Martin Canada to deliver its new Common Module All Mode interrogator system to support the Canadian navy's Halifax-class frigate modernization program.
Under the initial $16.3 million deal, Telephonics will mark its first entry into the shipboard identification friend or foe market. Officials say if all options are exercised, the contract could exceed $20 million.
"Together with Lockheed Martin Canada, we are preparing to meet the threat of increased littoral conflicts in this century and it is critical that identification friend or foe sensors such as ours have the automation and capability to rapidly and accurately identify friendly and neutral parties in dense platform environments in order to prevent fratricide," Kevin McSweeney, Telephonics Radar and identification friend or foe systems president, said in a statement.
