TEWKSBURY, Mass., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted Raytheon to support the Air and Missile Defense Radar development with S-band component concept studies.

U.S. company Raytheon says its Integrated Defense Systems unit was awarded the contract. Under the $9.9 million deal, Raytheon will conduct concept studies of S-band capabilities and radar suite controller's functionality for the Air and Missile Defense Radar suite.

The radar suite, which includes S-band radar, X-band radar, and radar suite controller technologies, is under development to support the Navy's Future Surface Combatant and other ship classes in the future.

"We will leverage our experience and expertise with our scalable family of naval radars as a distinct advantage in helping the Navy to develop this next-generation radar," Robert Martin, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, vice president and deputy of Seapower Capability Systems, said in a statement.

"The envisioned commonality and scalability for the AMDR will help reduce costs across the fleet while its advanced capabilities will provide no doubt-reliability and effectiveness for naval forces around the world -- today and tomorrow."
