WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin announced it has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Navy to be taken under consideration for the Littoral Combat Ship contract award.
A team led by U.S. company Lockheed Martin has submitted its Littoral Combat Ship proposal to the Navy's Program Executive Office, Ships in a move to be selected for the 2010 fiscal year Littoral Combat Ship contract.
The Lockheed Martin-led team is competing with U.S. company General Dynamics following the Navy's decision to proceed with a limited competition.
"Lockheed Martin's proposal builds off our successful delivery of Littoral Combat Ship 1 and current construction efforts on Littoral Combat Ship 3 to more efficiently produce this new class of warship," Dan Schultz, Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors vice president and general manager, said in a statement.
"We have taken significant steps to reduce the number of labor hours required to build the ship, including streamlining production processes by working with lean manufacturing experts from across Lockheed Martin, Fincantieri and Bollinger."
