HMS Westminster undergoing overhauls

PLYMOUTH, England, July 31 (UPI) -- The British Royal Navy announced its HMS Westminster frigate will receive several system upgrades including work on its Seawolf self-defense missile system.

The HMS Westminster, one of the navy's Type-23 frigates, has deployed to the Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, England, where the ship will undergo approximately $18.13 million in upgrades, the British Ministry of Defense reported.

Work on the HMS Westminster will include a new command system that controls the weapons that will upgrade the ship's firepower and also updates for its Seawolf self-defense missile system.

"We work closely with industry to equip our armed forces and this refit will boost several of HMS Westminster's systems, making her the most advanced frigate in the fleet," Quentin Davies, British minister for defense equipment and support, said in a statement.

"The Seawolf update that is being rolled out across the Type 23s is designed to combat the increasing threat of faster, lower flying and more maneuverable missiles today and also to guard against future advances."
