PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y., July 24 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has begun a vehicle screening pilot test at the Port Jefferson Ferry Terminal in New York.
The TSA announced it has begun a three-week pilot test with support from the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Co. using new screening technologies designed to scan vehicles for explosives threats.
The pilot test is part of an effort to scan the vehicles prior to boarding the Port Jefferson-Bridgeport Ferry with a backscatter screening van to ensure security at the port where more than 1 million passengers pass through annually.
"Vehicle screening technology is yet another tool that TSA can deploy to respond to threats that arise from new intelligence or as part of major events," John Sammon, TSA Office of Transportation Sector Network Management assistant administrator, said in a statement.
"This test will allow us to develop a plan for future deployment during times of heightened security threat levels."
