COSTA MESA, Calif., July 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has awarded Ceradyne Inc. a follow-on contract for a delivery of its lightweight ceramic body armor.

U.S. company and technical ceramic products developer Ceradyne was awarded the contract from the Army Research, Development and Engineering Command at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

Under the $18.7 million follow-on order, Ceradyne will deliver its Small Arms Protective Inserts lightweight ceramic body armor as part of a Foreign Military Sales requirement.

"We are very pleased to receive this additional Foreign Military Command body armor order," David Reed, Ceradyne North American Operations president, said in a statement.

"We believe that the government placed this order with Ceradyne, at least in part, due to its reliable delivery, quality performance on previous SAPI procurements and competitive pricing."
