GROTON, Conn., July 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has modified a contract with General Dynamics to perform maintenance work on the USS Hartford to restore the submarine to full-service condition.

U.S. company General Dynamics says its Electric Boat business unit was awarded a contract modification worth $21.6 million, adding to a $15.8 million award it received in May.

Under the deal, General Dynamics will provide maintenance and restoration services on the USS Hartford (SSN-768), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine, following the submarine's collision with the USS New Orleans in March.

According to a news release, General Dynamics will perform "off-hull fabrication of the port retractable bow plane as well as material procurement and off-hull fabrication of the sail to restore USS Hartford to full-service condition."
