FAIRFAX, Va., July 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Homeland Security Department has contracted General Dynamics to compete for National Communications System support service awards.

U.S. company General Dynamics says its Advanced Information Systems unit was awarded the contract. Under the indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity deal, General Dynamics will compete among three other awardees for work supporting the NCS's National Security and Emergency Preparedness Scientific, Engineering and Technical Assistance contracts.

Support for the national security and emergency preparedness programs includes providing emergency communications, restoration protocols and new technical initiatives among other requirements.

"With growing and changing threats to our nation, it is critical for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to continue to protect our national security and emergency preparedness telecommunications services and facilities," Lou Von Thaer, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems president, said in a statement.

"General Dynamics will help Homeland Security Department achieve its mission of securing critical infrastructures across the federal government and private sector."
