Navy awards deal for recognition tech

PASADENA, Calif., July 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted Evolution Robotics Inc. to develop a technology capable of real-time object recognition even in challenging maritime conditions.

California-based Evolution Robotics, a computer vision research and development company, was awarded the contract from the Office of Naval Research. Under the approximately $1 million research deal, Evolution Robotics will develop a next-generation recognition technology to support maritime domain awareness.

The object recognition system will be required to identify boats and aircraft among other objects in the maritime environment in real time. Officials say the technology will be required to operate in difficult visibility conditions.

"We're pleased to have the Navy select Evolution Robotics and we're excited to work with them on their advanced research efforts," Paolo Pirjanian, Evolution Robotics chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"The main challenge with vision is to develop algorithms that reliably and efficiently solve a problem in realistic settings, with limited computing power."
