BALTIMORE, June 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted the Northrop Grumman-Cobham partnership to provide vehicle intercommunications technologies.

U.S.-based partnership Northrop Grumman-Cobham Intercoms LLC has been selected to support the Army's Communications and Electronics Command.

The indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, worth $2.4 billion over 10 years if all operations are exercised, is for NGCI to provide the Army with its VIS-X Vehicular Intercommunication System Expanded technologies.

According to a news release, the VIS-X is designed to provide vehicle crews with "increased command and control of the on-board and external communication assets, connection to future Internet Protocol-based digital communications networks, voice over-IP services, and an increased number of user interfaces for use by crew and next-generation IP radios."

"The enduring partnership between Northrop Grumman and Cobham is one that will continue to benefit our warfighters by providing them with cutting-edge technologies on the battlefield," Jeff Palombo, sector vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Land Forces Division, said in a statement.

"Providing enhanced situational awareness and IP-based digital communication networks will better protect our troops and allow them to fight smarter."
