ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 23 (UPI) -- U.S.-based Robotics Technology Consortium Inc. announced it has selected seven projects to advance unmanned ground technologies.

RTC has chosen five companies to work on seven projects selected to enhance the capabilities of currently deployed unmanned ground vehicles. Officials say the projects were also selected to advance future unmanned ground systems.

The first projects selected by RTC, supported by funding from the U.S. Defense Department, are from Silvus Technologies Inc., Chatten Associates and RE2 Inc., along with Sarnoff Corp. and iRobot Corp., which both were selected for two projects each.

"The evaluators were very impressed by the high quality and the number of the proposals submitted by RTC members," Ellen Purdy, Joint Ground Robotics enterprise director, said in a statement.

"The selected proposals stood out for their innovation and relevance to the needs of our deployed troops. In addition, a significant portion of the work is expected to be performed by nontraditional government contractors."
