SYRACUSE, N.Y., June 3 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin has been selected to develop a next-generation radar prototype to support U.S. Air Force missile and aircraft detection requirements.

U.S. company Lockheed Martin was awarded approximately $25 million from the Electronic Systems Command at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Under the deal, Lockheed Martin will develop a 3-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar prototype.

Lockheed Martin's 3DELRR prototype will be part of a competition ahead of a selection for an Air Force contract to replace its TPS-75 long-range radars with a next-generation technology.

"Lockheed Martin will leverage our years of experience in developing transportable long-range radars to provide our long-time Air Force customer with a radar that will meet its mission requirements," Carl Bannar, Lockheed Martin radar business vice president in Syracuse, N.Y., said in a statement.

"We are honored to have been selected to continue development on 3DELRR, and intend to demonstrate that we have the best solution."
