BATH, Maine, May 4 (UPI) -- General Dynamics was awarded a contract to construct the second littoral combat ship with a trimaran hull for the U.S. Navy.

U.S. company General Dynamics says its Bath Iron Works subsidiary received the contract from the Navy. Under the deal, Bath Iron Works will lead a team constructing the Coronado littoral combat ship.

Company officials said the Coronado marks the second littoral combat ship to feature the General Dynamics-developed trimaran hull and will be the fourth of the Navy's littoral combat ships. The 419-foot Coronado is expected to be delivered to the Navy in May 2012.

"Recent maritime events have clearly validated the need for the U.S. Navy to have the capabilities offered by (littoral combat ships)," Jeff Geiger, Bath Iron Works president, said in a statement.

"We're proud to be playing an important role in fulfilling that need. Our team is ready to apply the lessons we've learned during the construction of Independence, LCS 2, to help make Coronado the most affordable, most effective (littoral combat ship) it can be."
