WALTHAM, Mass., April 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted Novell to support cybersecurity initiatives to help counter threats to naval computer networks.

Massachusetts-based Novell was awarded the contract from the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command. According to a news release, Novell will supply its Sentinel technologies to "automate and centralize security monitoring across hundreds of diverse locations worldwide."

Officials said the Novell Sentinel system was selected to protect the Navy's computer networks with event management and monitoring services to identify potential threats.

"Our job is to secure and defend Navy networks worldwide against a persistent and adaptive threat," Jim Granger, NCDOC director of capabilities and readiness, said in a statement.

"Novell Sentinel helps us accomplish that. The biggest military advantage is the power of information. We rely on the security of our networks to get the right information to the right people quickly."
