RIO DE JANEIRO, April 17 (UPI) -- The Brazilian air force has contracted Lockheed Martin to support airspace-monitoring efforts in the Amazon region of the country.
U.S. company Lockheed Martin was contracted by Brazil to provide support for six TPS-77 long-range air-surveillance radars. Officials said the Lockheed Martin-manufactured TPS-77 radars are currently deployed to monitor the country's Amazon airspace.
The contract, worth $1.6 million, is designed to maintain the critical Brazilian Integrated Air Traffic Control and Air Defense System as part of the Amazon Surveillance System project.
"The TPS-77s have dual-use capability, providing both air surveillance and air traffic control," a news release said.
